To some degree, choosing window blinds is largely a matter of taste. You might like gray blinds, while a friend or relative prefers beige ones. You might like thin blinds, while someone else prefers thicker ones. Choosing blinds that you find attractive is definitely important. But before you get to the point of considering looks, you should consider the following factors as you compare various blind options.
How do the blinds open and close?
Blinds can be opened and closed in a few different ways. The most classic option is to have a set of strings which you can pull, both up and down and side to side, to control the blinds. Blinds with this mechanism can be quite affordable, but they are not the easiest to operate. The strings can get stuck or twisted.
Another option is blinds that you basically open and close by pulling up and down on a bar at the bottom of the blinds. These blinds cost a little more, but are much easier to control. However, if you are short, you may have trouble reaching up to pull the blinds down.
How durable is the material?
Blinds don't undergo as much wear and tear as, say, a floor or a carpet. But they can get bumped into, and they are exposed to changes in temperature since they sit right against your windows. As such, you want to choose blinds that are durable. The thicker the material, the better. Blinds made from a plastic material, like vinyl, are often a better choice than those made from wood or a paper-like product. When looking at blinds, always touch the material to get a sense of how thick and durable it truly is. Buy the most durable blinds that you can afford.
Do they come in all of the sizes you need?
If all of the windows in your home are different sizes, and you want blinds for all those windows, then you need to select blinds that come in a range of sizes, too. Some blinds may come in only a few sizes, which means they might not be the best choice for you. Then again, if all of your windows are the same size, then you only need to find blinds that come in that particular size.
If you focus on the features above when picking window blinds, you should find plenty of styles that suit you.
